"If you want to change your art, change your habits"
"It would be a mistake to ascribe this creative power to an inborn talent. In art, the genius creator is not just a gifted being, but a person who has succeeded in arranging
for their appointed end, a complex of activities, of which the work is the outcome."
"It is only by drawing often, drawing everything, drawing incessantly, that one fine day you discover to your surprise that you have rendered something in its true character."
"Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do".
"As practice makes perfect, I cannot not but make progress:
each drawing one makes, each study one paints, is a step forward."
"The artist begins with a vision, a creative operation requiring an effort.
Creativity takes courage."
"No art was ever less spontaneous than mine. What I do is the result of reflection and study of the great masters; of inspiration, spontaneity, temperament...I know nothing."
"Talent?
What they call talent is nothing but the capacity for doing continuous work in the right way."
"Paint as you see and be accurate in your drawing: the whole secret of your art is there."
"An artist needs the best studio instruction, the rigorous demands,
and the toughest criticism in order to tune up his sensibilities."
"Beyond talent lie all the usual words:
discipline, love, luck, but most of all, endurance."
Ry harle publishing
Ry Harle Publishing was established to bring Don Smith's first book, "The Motivation of Art" to artists all ages, from classrooms to studios. The goal of Ry Harle Publishing is to create a community to share the rich history of western art in a community devoted to motivating new generations of artists.
The idea for "The Motivation of Art" came about after watching eager and enthusiastic art students slowly lose interest believing instead that art was beyond their abilities. Pop-culture stereotypes, pseudoscience, and even centuries old myths eventually form demotivating beliefs that become self-perpetuating behavior.
I want art students and artists alike to dispel those outdated and misleading notions to learn from history's most successful artists that ability results from work. Work leads to motivation that leads to competence and confidence which in turn leads to motivation. It's the self-perpetuating cycle of "The Motivation of Art!"
Look for more books coming soon. Contact Don if you have ideas and experiences that would add to the Ry Harle library!
"the motivation of art"
Art and art education has been captured by influences that range from ancient myths, social constructs, to pop-culture pseudoscience. Classroom instruction includes the conventional wisdom that artistic ability is dependent on conditions outside of ourselves, whether that's fate, talent or personality. History proves otherwise.
"The Motivation of Art" is a book that views the definitions of art, artists, and art education through the corrective lens of history to see that artistic ability isn't dependent on a particular personality profile. It doesn't reside on just one side of your brain, or is the result of dependencies, moods, or muses. Artistic capabilities are developed through continued effort. The most recognized artists of all time shared a common desire to "work," and their stories tell how they created their own motivation through disciplined work habits and intentional routines. They didn't leave motivation to chance.
Join me on this path to new routines. "The Motivation of Art" is a book of practical life advice on how to create your own motivation. The basic principles of self-motivation are proven and demonstrated by successful artists through the centuries, and around the world.
